THE HERB THAT MIGHT SAVE OUR HEALTH

The legend that this herb initiates leads us to the Old and New Testament and shows us the sacred and secret nature of the BOSWELLIA. In the Bible is know as a Frankincense or the olibanum which is the dried resin of BOSWELLIA tree. According to same studies, it has been mentioned about 55 times in the Holy Book and it was gift, back at the time, more important than gold. If we recall the narration, this was one of the three gifts of Magi, among gold and myrrh. The Baby Jesus has been worshipped by burning frankincense:”Frankincense is a biblical metaphor representing the presence of God. Burning frankincense is also seen as a symbol of worship and prayer . The fragrant rising smoke burned during prayer or ritualistic sacrifice shows the link between earth and heaven, connected by our prayers which are most fragrant unto God. When a person or object was literally anointed with frankincense, they were also being figuratively shown to be anointed by the Holy Spirit, indicating that they were ordained by God for a noble purpose.”

The current research has shown us that our BOSWELLIA can reduce the inflammation, boost the immune system, help the skin heal and prevent health deviations. It is available as resin, pill and as cream . The most effective part of it is boswellic acid , actually 4 of them that are responsible for fighting inflammation processes. AKBA is one of the most famous acids but the other 3 have also influence on the health benefits.

The science claims that acids of our BOSWELLIA serrata are so powerful that they inhibit different molecules that might cause genetically confusion and sickness, based on inflammation. The point of study was to define the dimension of impact of acids in cancer development or better to say, inhibition of it. The studies might prove that those acids have a certain role in stopping cancer cells transmission. For now is that just a little progress but it is still very important progress for cancer scientific research and advanced placement.

The next point is targeting the RA ( rheumatoid arthritis) through the addressing the inflammatory indicators. When we add Asthma, Parkin’s disease and many similar illnesses that are based on inflammation , we can assure that acids of our magic tree have a big potential. It is still not enough researched, investigated, tested, documented and at the end , confirmed as a super secret of nature. The herb is still somewhere between folk medicine, early phase of medical studies and advanced hope for survival. It has biblical roots, chemical impact and spiritual significance. The plant is everything but not ordinary so it is good to consult physicians if you suffer from some additional issues.

  1. Sarah’s enlightening and inspiring article reminded me of the issues such species like Boswellia serrata are confronted with…

Presently, in regions where Boswellia serrata grows naturally (e.g. Punjab in India), the species is endangered due to human activities, which includes overharvesting: the global market for frankincense has resulted in unsustainable cultivation practices.

In addition, climate change is impacting on the species, as the atmospheric and top soil pressures and problems increase, in cohesion with industrial aspects such as river dams, open-cut mines and land-clearing for mass agribusiness.

Also, there are added issues of pressure on the species through overgrazing of livestock (i.e. ecosystem breakdown), locals cutting down the trees as fuel for fires, other cash-crops can impact negatively on the tree species, as well as the actual tapping process of the tree limbs.

A significant issue is the extensive decline in regional pollinators, which are essential for Boswellia serrata to flourish in a healthy biome. The species is a slow-growth plant with low-level ability in regeneration in such environmental conditions.

The Indian government has listed Boswellia serrata as a ‘Threatened Species’. There are proposals to prevent the extinction of the species in the wild, but more efforts are focused on synthetic cultivation schemes.
