THANATOPHILIA:FANTASY OR REALITY OF OUR SOCIETIES ?

“We are talking about material of the most serious and extreme kind: serious sexual violence, bestiality and necrophilia.”

-Paul Goggins

In the age of constant madness, when the boundaries between normal and absurd are endangered, being shocked is a privilege for many. We are digesting so many bad things on the daily level that we aren’t really capable to feel anything but indifference to the phenomena  that ruin our human race and all progress we have done till now. The homo sapiens has forgotten how to be horrified, disgusted or sad. The menu of idiotism that is served to us does not allow us to act anymore but only to see, hear and leave behind. Like it is not our society, like it is not our world, like it is not our civilization.

Sweden has always been known as a very liberal country. If it is not allowed somewhere else, it must be allowed in Sweden. In many cases, their progressive ideology is a good advantage but in some cases, it could be a disadvantage, the debacle of common sense, the failure of the whole human race. One year ago, The Independent has written about the attempts of the youth wing of the Swedish Liberal People’s Party to legalize incest and necrophilia. That was controversial for Sweden itself and there is no way that such regulations will be empowered anytime soon in this country but the area of such debate is opened. The main question is: who could ever come on that idea and why? The Stockholm branch of the mentioned party is interested to promote those sadistic values because they believe that sex must be a free choice and not defined by law. In this situation, they do not want to be limited by law to not have sex with their siblings (at the age of consent) and to not have sex with dead people. According to The Independent, they have voted on a motion to repeal Swedish laws that address incest and necrophilia:”But Cecilia Johnsson, president of LUF Stockholm, says that just because some people don’t think something is right and moral doesn’t mean it should be illegal. ‘I understand that [incest] can be considered unusual and disgusting,’ she said, ‘but the law cannot stem from it being disgusting.’According to her, the current laws on the books are protecting no one and may in fact be criminalizing people for consensual sex.”

The worst chapter of their manifest is accent on necrophilia, sexual activities with corpses. This term has a synonym- thanatophilia and it is known as a form of paraphilia in the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of  the American Psychiatric Association. That is a fascination, mostly sexualy and erotically , with the dead bodies. The act involves active and passive obsession with the corpses. The first one consists of sexual reunion with the dead person, based on romantic feelings, the sadistic sweetness of  possessing the non-resisting partner or expression of power over a victim  in the situation of homicide. In many records of FBI, the sadistic sexual killers have also combined the elements of necrophilia, sexually misused the victim post-mortem.The second one is based on imagination and fantasy.

The necrophilia itself was the silent follower of the evolutionary. It hasn’t been spoken too much about it, but it was known in the Ancient Egypt and Greece. The other archaic cultures had also the individuals who suffered from necrophilia but on different levels and sometimes in the shadow of the public interest.

Pietro_Pajetta_-_Der_Hass_-_1896.jpeg

Somewhere around 1850, the Belgian scientist Joseph Guislain came out with the term nécrophiles in his research study about a severe mental illness on the case of Francois Bertrand, the sergeant in the French army, the man known as Vampire of Montparnasse, the one accused and arrested for necrophilia. His story was shocking at the time it started. Bertrand exhumed the bodies of men and women from the graveyard and he had a sexual acts with them. He even has written the paragraph about his own feelings regarding the act with the dead body of 16-year-old girl:“I covered it with kisses and pressed it wildly to my heart. All that one could enjoy with a living woman is nothing in comparison with the pleasure I experienced. After I had enjoyed it for about a quarter of an hour, I cut the body up, as usual, and tore out the entrails. Then I buried the cadaver again.” The medical experts of Bertrand’s time has classified him as sadistic and mentally disordered person with the typical signs of necrophilia. He was jailed for one year.

Now,  we are going back to Sweden and Ms. Johnsson that fights for possible regulations about necrophilia in liberal Swedish system. What is all about ?How can anyone supports such an act? She claims that necrophilia should be legal only in the situation when those corpses consented to that for their lifetime:“You should get to decide what happens to your body after you die, and if it happens to be that someone wants to bequeath their body to a museum or for research, or if they want to bequeath to someone for sex, then it should be okay.” For this young liberal leaders from Sweden, the necrophilia is almost the same as scientific project Body Farm. I found this opinion of them very disturbing because it shows how low we are falling down and where is that bottom line of our shame?

In the USA is a penalty for necrophilia but then there are people who claim that this regulation is only fictional and that there are several American states that do not directly outlaw the problem of necrophilia.  Some politicians believe these are “loopholes in the law” and it is problem how to issue this topic in the U.S. legal system where some countries ban sodomy but have nothing against necrophilia although the both are disgusting. Aaron Vega, 45, is trying to get the law changed in Massachusetts and to push the system to make direct regulations against it. The states such as Kansas and Louisiana, Oklahoma and North Carolina, the law is swallow on the ground.  I do not claim here that those states do not have legal framework against necrophilia but most of them are not sure how to deal with the real incident. The possible solution is addressing as the sexual assault against a partner who can’t give a consent, some kind of a crime against nature. One  legal theorist John Troyer has written that the main problem about the right legal exposure of necrophilia is that the dead body is only a quasi-subject before the law.  Just this definition has made a lot of problem in the courts:“In Wisconsin a few years back, three young men were arrested while trying to dig up a corpse for sex. Since the state didn’t have an explicit necrophilia ban, they were charged with attempted sexual assault for their intent to have sex with an unwilling party. But an appeals court threw out their conviction, saying a corpse isn’t a person under state law, and therefore consent isn’t an issue.”

The courts are more concerned about the rise of epidemics due to the breaking into the graveyards than for the disrespecting of the  dead bodies. We are talking about people who passed away and whose after death peace is ruined by mentally disfigured living dead. One necrophile has written in his hidden online diary and interview that every necrophile need to be smart and organized to perform the passion. He actually described that in California is more important to not be caught breaking into the home of dead than to sexually communicate with the corpses. He even suggested to his fellows to use protection because of the numerous diseases they can possibly get from the dead people they picked up for their  sexual perverted games.

There is no much time for our madness to be caught and like a beast, to be leashed. I have no words anymore, just tears for all years of evolution that went wrong way.

  1. Thank you, Sarah, for such an insightful article. I have been aware that incest is legal and practiced in some parts of the world, but not necrophilia. This is really shocking, sick, disgusting, and destructive. I am not sure how low a human being can be. This is the result of the absence of God from our hearts and following our own lust and desires. And who can be farther astray than those who follow their lust without any guidance from God? If we as societies don’t wake up and sincerely return to God, more of the scary, disgusting, and harmful things that we don’t wish for will be reality.

  2. OMG ! Some “people” engage in Necrophilia !

Just when we thought that “humans”
couldn’t sink any lower ! I am shocked and appalled by how low “humans” have sunk !

This is either Mental Illness or Pure Evil ! Either way it has to be stopped by medication and therapy in the former case, and by strict laws in the latter case !

How can anyone in the right frame of mind do or even begin to think of such an act ?! This is utterly repulsive and disgusting !

Further, from a legal point, this is a breach of the law insofar as there is a lack of consent between the necrophile and the dead person. The idea, proposed by Cecilia Johnsson, that such aberrant behavior can be rationalized or legalized by obtaining consensual sex beforehand is absurd !

It devolves upon our societies to set the record straight. This would be implemented by dint of both medicines and therapy, should the necrophile be mentally ill, and by dint of extremely strict laws, should the necrophile be evil !

Thank you, Sarah, for your outstanding research and discussion herein !

  3. Sarah’s intriguing and enlightening article brought to mind various anthropological treatises upon the subject of ‘necrophilia’; which reach back to ‘The Histories’ by the ancient Grecian author Herodotus. In addition, it has been well-documented that certain primates and Homo sapiens can experience extensive difficulty in accepting that a loved-one is dead, and will gesticulate in a manner that gives the impression the deceased is alive, still. Often, this occurs among chimpanzees; especially, with infant mortality.

Obviously, necrophilia is a psychological disorder, but this is more so cultural and socio-political in its historical applications. For example, the Moche peoples (circa 1st century to 7th century CE) of the region of what became Peru did advocate necrophilia as an expression of perceived immortality; observed on some of their ceramic paintings depicting male skeletons masturbating on to dead female corpses. Successive Peruvian governments have not made it illegal for such depictions to appear in Moche promotional literature, etc., associated with the tourism trade and academic spheres. In fact, death and skeletons feature significantly in many Latin American arts, and Sarah herself published an article on Sainta Muerte in Mexico.

Arguably, in a purely psychological context, necrophilia is the ultimate sexual submissiveness of one individual; a person (i.e. the deceased) who has no ability to resist. This might refer to the issue of rejection, among other considerations. Some necrophiliacs have dismembered their victims, after performing necrophilia on them; seemingly, in order to eradicate the memory and or evidence (which suggests recognition of it being abnormal).

Is there a way to observe the first signs of necrophilia tendencies in children? Ostensibly, this is where it originates, in psychological development. Perhaps, a child is fascinated by dead animals and insects, and begins to fantasize about various possibilities. In adolescence, human arousal has diverse and variegated progenitors, case by case: some boys desire very sedate/submissive girls. Necrophilia is not a common occurrence, but one that requires vigilance, because it has been known of serial killers to seek out victims specifically for the purpose of necrophilia (i.e. murdering the individual, firstly).

  4. I would just add that Somnophilia (from Latin ‘somnus’ – sleep and Greek φιλία, ‘-philia’ – love), is a paraphilia in which an individual becomes sexually aroused by someone who is unconscious. The condition has a high degree of correlation throughout history with incest and may progress to necrophilia. It is of the marauding-predatory type in which erotic arousal and facilitation or attainment of orgasm are responsive to and dependent on intruding upon someone who is unable to respond.

Typically, the individual upon whom the sex act is committed by the somnophiliac is a stranger not previously known intimately to the individual. The somnophiliac may create an unconscious state in the victim by drugging them, or may engage in sex with someone who is inebriated or asleep. The perpetrator becomes attracted to the idea of a sexual participant who is unable to resist the advances.

The French film ‘Qui a tué Bambi?’ (Who killed Bambi, 2003) involves a surgeon who drugs his female patients in order to subsequently engage in sexual intercourse with them, without their consent. The assailant resorts to murder after one of the women wakes up from her unconscious state, as he begins to remove her clothing.

Agalmatophilia (from the Greek agalma ‘statue’, and ‘-philia’ φιλία – love) is a paraphilia involving sexual attraction to a statue, doll, mannequin or other similar figurative object. The attraction may include a desire for actual sexual contact with the object, a fantasy of having sexual (or non-sexual) encounters with an animate or inanimate instance of the preferred object, the act of watching encounters between such objects, or sexual pleasure gained from thoughts of being transformed or transforming another into the preferred object. This is a trick the fictional character of Mephistopheles plays on Doctor Faustus, involving Helen of Troy.
